This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
