As any significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
