One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
