Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
