Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
