Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
